decking rope

We currently sell three main types of decking ropeby the metre, including:

Best-selling sizes for these include 24-65mm. However, other sizes are available and these can be found in the respective jutesynthetic hemp and manila categories. The maximum continuous length that we offer is 220m and, if you need more than one length, this can be easily specified in the ‘comments’ box during checkout.

All of our decking ropes are manufactured by a trusted overseas partner and, as such, are guaranteed to be superior quality. The ends are bound with PVC tape as standard. But, if required, you can also choose from a range of other rope end finishes – including whipped, end-capped, soft eye spliced and hard eye spliced. More information on these options can be found on the ‘rope end finishes’ page.

What is decking rope?

Essentially, decking rope is a rope – either made from synthetic or natural fibres – that can withstand the elements. It has an attractive ‘natural hemp’ appearance and is very soft to touch. Yet it also demonstrates excellent strength, durability and weather-resistance – making it the perfect option for many outdoor projects.

For example, decking rope is commonly employed in a garden setting to create outdoor handrails, borders and decking areas. It’s also a popular choice for children’s play equipment – used to create high-quality rope ladders and swing sets, such as those available in our ‘Play is Fun!’ department.

Which is the right decking rope for my project?

All of the decking ropes in our online collection are suitable for home-based projects. However, there are some differences between hemp, jute and manila – and the right type for you will depend on the specific way in which you intend to use it.

Nine times out of ten, we recommend decking rope made from synthetic hemp. This has a very natural appearance and is incredibly soft to handle. But, as it is made from synthetic fibres, it‘s also weatherproof, UV resistant and will not rot or shrink if wet. It’s regarded as an all-round winner, perfect for prolonged outdoor use.

By contrast, jute and manila decking ropes are made from natural fibres. This means they can be prone to shrinkage and – despite having a polypropylene core – they will deteriorate over time if exposed to the elements. But they do have a very rustic and traditional look, that will complement planting and timber work in your garden. And what’s more, for any indoor applications, jute rope can be a much cheaper and more affordable alternative to synthetic hemp.
